Nightmare

This month has been the worst month of my life. And that is saying a lot, because I have had some bad ones. I wake up in the morning and for a split second, everything is a blank slate, I don't recall the details of what I am worried about, or that I have any worries at all.

And then it all hits me, the knowledge I now know. What I did not know one month prior, and I am terrified and consumed and fearful and I don't know why I should get out of bed. Or once I do, how I will quiet my mind all day. I feel like I stuck in a constant state of fear and panic and sadness.

I feel like I want to change everything all at once. I want to move South, I want to leave Maryland, I want to travel, I want to pack up everything and start with a clean slate. My husband wants to change nothing and we are fighting like cage fighters about every decision. We've fought about the bank accounts, my Sephora purchase, Valentine's Day, last Christmas, living wills, current wills, healthcare power of attorney, going to the Olypmics (long story), going to dinner, our gym membership, taking off work, moving to a state that allows physician assisted suicide, Ethan's private school and selling my car. Oh, and the snow on our roof. Nobody wins, no decisions are made, but we go to bed exhausted and spent from the process. Every single night.

I am floored by what has snuck up on me. All of a sudden, my left hand skills fine motor skills appear to be gone. I cannot button things, tie my son's shoes, and I don't know how many wine glasses I have dropped in the past week. My hands shake, my muscles twitch and I am in fear of what my own body has in store for me down the road. When I drink with my left hand, my brain does not know where my mouth is, I end up six inches from my destination and pour water down my shirt. I forget this happens and do this at least twice a day.

I know I should be enjoying each day, but that is a trite expression, and to try and live it is a lot harder when you are watching everything crumble around you. My words are occasionally slurred, each time that happens I feel like I've been punched in the stomach. My creative mind seems intact, but I cannot spell and I do not know the rules of grammar. (Grammer?) I cannot read aloud. Writing seems .... hard.

And, then there are the big moments, when I am so stunned and saddened that I sit there in shock and try to process all I have lost. And all that I still have to lose. At dinner the other night, a friend asked where my son had gone to kindergarten, and I did not know. I could not come up with the name of his school. Nor could I remember what grade my son is in now.

My neurosurgeon is stalking me because my MRI was rescheduled due to the blizzard. My brain is so screwed up, I KNOW but I cannot handle knowing. I was ready to cope with all of this, and then when it got pushed back, I could not cope anymore. Like I had a finite date in mind, and the lack of control and having to adjust to that was too much. And now I cannot get it together.

I would like to say I have been handling this all with grace and dignity. I have not. I have snapping at my husband, at my son, and prone to crying fits of unimaginable power. I hurt. This weekend was the worst, I could not wrap my head around my mind and quiet it all down and I broke. I wept so hard and for so long that I ruptured a blood vessel in my eye. And then I wept about that. And then THAT hurt.

To say I am feeling like life is unfair these days does not even scratch the surface of the pain. I read a book at Alzheimer's and got upset that the man dying was well in his 70's and had lived a long life *(he's so lucky to be old!), I watched that movie about that dying kid that needs parts from her sister and thought, she's so lucky to be able to say goodbye to her family and not have her brain affected. I am thinking a kid with cancer is lucky. I know. Don't judge me.

And now I am off to an appointment with my therapist. I am happy for that.

School Crazy Hair Day. Guess how many times he's asked to "wear blue hair to school" since this day? At least 400,000. Per morning.

If Kate Gosselin Can Do It ...

First order of business, I would like Blake Lively to play me in the Lifetime Movie adaption of my world famous book (NOT Kate Gosselin).

Second order of business, no, this is not an announcement that I am planning to turn my uterus into a clown car and have 700 babies. That's crazy.

I am planning to write a book - a world famous book ! - which will later involve Blake Lively.

Now, I need some tips, I recognize some of you are authors and/or just geniuses about how the world works. Sending book proposals? Getting published? Who do I have to sleep with to get an editor? Spill, please, people and share your hints.

And then tell me what a great idea this is! So much better than Kate's vow renewal ... which I may or may not have watched ...

Dessert

Don't worry, Ethan's was light on the tequila.

Dinner

We are still snowed in. But we will not talk about that.

Bored? I suggest giving your small child a camping stick and a bag of marshmallows.

We only had one (minor) kitchen fire; which is on par with what happens when I cook dinner myself.

Hips Don't Lie

Day Three Of We Are Stuck In The House Blizzard Update.

Jeff is currently out shoveling all three feet (!) of snow. Or he is building himself a snow cave within which to hide as an escape from our three continual days of forced togetherness in our small house. It's unclear.

Late last night, we ran out of wine. This was a problem. Once the two-day Pinot buzz faded, we realized that neither of us had showered since Friday. And we were both still wearing two-day old Dorito-crumb covered sweatpants and wife-beaters.

To distract from our poor hygiene, we played Monopoly. My son cheats, he justifies his behavior because he loves having money. Like gleeful gloating about the fact that people give him the money. He cannot get enough of it. I tried to explain just because you WANT the money, you cannot break all the rules to get it, even if the end result of breaking all the rules is having more money. He looked at me blankly. I think we have a future politician on our hands.

There was a discussion about iPod selection. I asked J whether he would rather Shakira or Carrie Underwood. He picked Carrie. That is not the right answer! I pointed out that Shakira has that latin hotness thing about her, her hips don't lie, Carrie does not even have hips AND would take you out with a Louisville Slugger! Don't you see?! After consideration of that important fact, he changed it to Taylor Swift, which is creepy because she is nine-years-old. I said I did not want Jeff to be that skeevy dad. You know - That Dad - the one that will check out our teenage son's friends and ask them questions about cheerleading practice.

To lighten things up, I changed the subject. It was important that I know if we crashed in the Andes and had to eat each other for survival, which body part Jeff would want me to eat first. Of course, I would be the survivor, due to my snow diet of Doritos and Oreos, I am currently at 95% body fat and a BMI of 82. I would bounce on impact and then be well-insulated from the climate. I said I was sorry for him and then generously told him to pick the part I would have to eat. Calf? Ear Lobe? Lower back? He refused to answer, which proves to me that he does not actually love me and does love Carrie Underwood. He would give Carrie an earlobe, I bet.

Back to Carrie ... I made him promise that should the opportunity present itself, he would pick Shakira. I told him that was very important to me. He agreed. I plan to hold him to that. I think I hear Jeff now. It sounds like he is on the phone with some plow company. Something about "I will pay you triple to make an emergency stop ... ?"

Red Rum

You may have heard something about a big snowstorm on the East Coast? The news might have mentioned it once or twice.

We have thirty-five inches of snow and counting. A reminder: I live in Maryland, not in Antarctica. Above is our front yard. My car is under that big snow mountain to the left. Our house? Under that big snow mountain to the right. I am the one in the orange skiing to the store for essential survival provisions: (more) cookies and blue cheese stuffed olives, which we ran out of last night.

Besides the seven-hundred feet of snow trapping me (TRAPPING ME!) in the house (IN THE HOUSE!!), there is an animal stuck in our wall (IN OUR WALL!!!). My use of the caps lock and hyper-exclamation pointage is always a fair measure of my general mood and sanity level (SANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Predictions are that we will be plowed out by Thursday. In five days. That is five too many days. If I wanted to live in the tundra, I would have moved to the tundra. The picture below nicely sums up
my feelings on our winter wonderland situation and the "kittens" gnawing and scuttling in my wall and Mother Nature's mandated prohibition on going anywhere for days and days and days and DAYS .....

So. Back to my Cool Ranch Doritos and cookies. 4,000 calories a day of pure sugar and starch appears to have a calming effect on my mood. All five of my chins and I will be happy to say "Hasta la vista, baby!" to the resident penguins (and kittens) and "Hello, Bitch, Were You Been All This Time!? Have You Done Something Different With Your Hair Because You LOOK ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!?" to Spring.

Eat Dessert First

This was forwarded to me today. It fit my mood, which is manic and must get things done and OMG the life clock is ticking!

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking one day about all those people on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back.

From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible. How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on television? I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?'

She would gas up and stammer, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain'. And my personal favorite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college. Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer.

One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.

When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to... not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask someone 'How are you?' Do you actually hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, 'We'll do it tomorrow.' And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say 'Hi.'

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift.... Thrown away.... Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over.

So, friends, if you got a really bad diagnosis, what you would do? What would you change about your life? Nothing? Everything? I am grappling with that this week (ahead of time of "news"... that's how I roll). Please share, I want to know.

Future Michelin Chef

The winter stomach bug has found our house. Ethan is home sick from school today. Because there was an aggregate three hours of house slumber, per Murphy's Law Of Kids Staying Up Late, Ethan woke up at dawn.

While I begged for "just ten more minutes" of sleep, Ethan busied himself in the kitchen. I heard some slamming about downstairs, but figured as long as the smoke alarms were not going off, we were good. I would get out of bed if the firetrucks arrived.

While I was still warmly wrapped in the blankets, Ethan presented me with the final product of all the slamming -- breakfast-in-bed -- a paper plate full of Nilla Wafers and a still-wrapped-in-cellophane Kraft cheese slice, platescaped with a flower from the dining room.

I pink puffy heart my momma's boy.

True Romance

In case anyone is at a loss for what to do for Valentine's Day, I found this very simple evening on the W Hotel website ... this is a real thing, I am not making this up ...

A few comments:

1) Personal body chocolatier!?!

Happy February 1st

Hope this month brings you some love.

I put this together for Valentine's Day. It is a little early, but usually I am twenty minutes late, so on balance, this works out. I am not usually a fan of sappy scrapbook quotes, but I am feeling a little sentimental these days, sue me ...

To my infinitely patient husband: Thank you for putting up with me for the past twelve-and-a-half years, though you've only been legally obligated to do so for nine.

You are a strong person, a good husband, and an excellent father. Thank you for being by my side through the years.
