School is out for the summer! Anyone else have kids where the last week of school had more activities packed in than a trip to Europe? Field day/graduation/book reading party/end of year BBQ/dad's something or other ...
Regarding field day, if you volunteer, and you slather your kid with a shot glass full of SPF 1,178 every twenty minutes like a concerned, dutiful mom, yet neglect to put sunscreen on your own shoulders/back over the course of a three-hour ninety-degree day, you will be a tomato for the next week. I am talking red, raw, fire. Like the surface of the sun, on my back. Oops. Perhaps I should have rethought the field day volunteer outfit of daisy dukes and Confederate flag string-bikini top. What? The email said "casual" dress.
A curious phenomena arose during this observing of all the school festivities. For the first time, I noted that it seems as though my son is IN with those first grade ladies. They like him, like him. For the most part, he seems oblivious to the hair-twisting, giggling attention.
Or so I thought. While driving the other day, he was enjoying a party favor from my friends' twins' first birthday. A pinwheel. Which is more fun when you roll the window down and hold it up in the car's wind to make it spin at super speed.
A SUV hauling a gaggle of field-hockey uniformed teens stopped next to us at a light. They took in the scene and started smiling and waving at Ethan and his pinwheel. He sighed and rolled up the window.
I wondered what that was all about and pointed out that they were waving at him because they thought he was cute.
He replied, in a world-weary tone, and shot me his best Blue Steel. "I know, Mommy. That is what girls do. I get that ALL. THE. TIME."

Such a rough life for so young a man! On a separate note, I hope your sunburn heals quickly. (Mine never does, but someone's ought to.)
Our school year ends tomorrow with the last of three early dismissal days in a row. I truly dislike early dismissal days.
I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough for field day! Then we can show up in *matching* mother-daughter Daisy Dukes and bikini tops. Maybe I'll wear the American flag and put her in the Confederate? It will be like the MTV version of "The North & The South" right there on the soccer field.
That is hilarious! And the post title is perfect for describing his response...!
I love it! That is hilarious....the second he gets a cell phone girls will be texting him every minute of the day!
Thanks for sharing your wisdom on life and I REALLY appreciate your comments on my blog. Gene
A mom at my son's school came up to me and told me that my son had a huge crush on her daughter - in a tone like I needed to do something about it. When I questioned my son, he rolled his eyes and said that she wouldn't stop hugging him. What is with these young hussies?
hilarious!! =) you make me laugh! Thank you! Sorry about the sunburn... I do that ... all too often! will I ever learn?? Enjoy your first week of summer! We are not done until Monday!! *sigh*
I feel your pain. I spend my whole summer with the tomato colored burning group of folks. You'll find us cowering under the single umbrella table at most parties... I love kids' Blue Steel poses. My son has shot them my way too, with a thought bubble floating over his little blonde 3 year old head saying "Yah mom, I know I'm cute!"
Welcome to summer! I hope you heal, and pack extra sunscreen next time you wear the patriotic bikini!
for a second there when I read that he was "driving" - I thought it odd that little ones would be flirting with a teenager - LOL....
My son is the total opposite - he never believes that a girl would ever like him - and he's a good looking guy (says proud mom)
That is so cute! He sounds like a smart young man.
:) poor kid! it's so tough being adorable.
ALL THE TIME. Poor guy. Ha ha.
So excited to have stumbled upon another fun lawyer's blog! The internet is in a sad state where most lawyer blogs are kinda boring, but not yours! Yay! :)
